I propose to re-make a finished version of this sculpture. It consists of a low tray (steel and plaster) containing plaster cast fingertips coming up from the bottom, among milkweed pods (may change). The tray is overlaid with a metal grid onto which individual waxen strings have been ritually placed. The ritual can* be done in the space, as a durational performance. This involves the silent, methodical placement of the upright waxen string at the intersections of the grid. It constitutes an accounting and individuation of the unknown dead under the rubble and those waiting to be uncovered.

  1. Abacus, 48” x 16” x 12”, steel, plaster, bronze, local milkweed, cotton string, wax, pine

Image is a sketch. I would re-make it with noble materials.

This would also include bronze and plaster fingertips emerging from the bottom of the tub (very subtle).

This is a sketch of a past configuration. Imagine a similar layout with tools and abstracted metal forms (no knife or print), reminiscent of handcraft and vaguely industrial processes abandoned midway. The reference here is Heidegger’s On the Question Concerning Technology (and the importance of the hand in revealing its essence and thus our selves to our selves.

2. Techne, dimensions variable, steel, hardware, wax, nylon, cotton,

3. Untitled (Hand)

I propose a new piece cast in bronze from plaster and sand. It would sit on a custom pedestal like suiseki. It would carry strong gestural marks of the hand that made it, and also have digit-like extensions, reminiscent of a multi-armed idol or a buddha's hand citrus. Please see the attached reference images.
